Paul Diestel

Paul Diestel´s sources of inspiration are nature finds: ash-seed, sunflower-seed-shell or privet hawk moth at pupal stage. Fascinated by things in the process of transformation, he tries to replicate them in wood in a new form. For him, the sculptural process is a digging for the essential by removing the nonessential. With the reduction of form, Paul Diestel is also looking for a prototype for all things. This elaborate search for the form is followed by a next, intensive process. Using natural materials such as earth, lime and rabbit glue, he applies several layers to the objects, compacting and polishing them. The bare wood is raw and vulnerable. Through the many layers he encloses his sculptures with a surface that covers the form like a protective skin.
