Johannes Hüppi

The work of Johannes Hüppi is imposing because of its painterly and narrative quality. In his representational oil paintings on wood, he focuses on different topics and rings the changes.

Hüppi knows his craft - his works are subtly elaborate in a downright classical manner. He uses cunning light directions that especially find expression when used on his precisely shaped women´s bodies. Through an almost magical illumination of the scenes, a mystical atmosphere is created that enhances the sometimes irritating character of the shown subjects.

In his paintings, the artist considers the question of how classical contents can be interpreted anew and contemporarily. Despite their physically emphatic presence, the female figures, which regularly appear in Hüppi´s work, seem distant and do not reveal anything about their mysterious aura, their facial expressions remain secretive. The paintings build a projection surface of the observer?s wishes, thus leading us far out of reality and into the realm of fantasy.
