Julia Rothmund
In her paintings, Julia Rothmund deals with the portrayal of light.
The images depict empty interiors. The image section varies between large interiors with openings that allow the observer to see the rooms behind them or narrow corners of rooms that evoke a certain intimacy.
Bright daylight enters the rooms through openings like windows, doors or wall penetrations. The ensuing blazing light reflexes are a contrast to dark, shadowed areas in the interior.
Julia Rothmund purposely chooses the empty space. Neither people nor objects appear in it. She makes light the protagonist on the stage of the painting instead.
In several scumbles, Rothmund layers different shades of colours which makes the light cones on the wall area light up in diverse iridescent tones.
The most fascinating aspect of the potentiality of light is that it, by its very nature, increases the intensity of the colour to such an extent that even an empty room is filled with life.
Contrary to the visual overstimulation, velocity and loudness of today´s world, Julia Rothmann creates a counter-image of reverent silence ? partly harmoniously pensive, but also alarmingly quiet - through the focus on colour and light in an empty room.
